Spec Script Sale: Untitled Cameron Crowe Project

Sony Pictures entertainment acquires an untitled love story spec script from writer-director Cameron Crowe with Emma Stone attached to star. From Deadline:

…the project is a two-hander, and the male lead hasn’t yet been set, and the tone is reminiscent of past Crowe films Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire.

I went back and forth on whether to include this deal [it was announced July 30]. The fact that Crowe is involved, is it really a spec script? Technically speaking, yes, if he wrote it without compensation up front and went out to buyers with it to sell. Maybe not typical, but still I believe we have to count it as a spec sale.

Crowe is repped by CAA.

By my count, this is the 66th spec script sale of 2012.

There were 57 spec script sales by July 30th last year.

The 66th spec script didn’t sell last year until September 12th.

Spec script sales are up 14% year-to-date compared to 2011.
