Subtext types
In a recent SMC class discussion, it occurred to me it would be both fun and interesting to ask GITS readers for examples of specific types of subtext. For example:
* If a character refers to him/herself in the third person (e.g., when Reggie Jackson said in an interview, “What Reggie Jackson wants, Reggie Jackson gets”), that can convey a character with a big ego.
* If a character says “obviously” or “clearly” often in conversation (e.g., “Obviously I know what I’m doing… clearly I have things under control”), then it’s probably a sign that they don’t know what they’re doing, they don’t have things under control, they’re attempting to overcompensate for their weak status.
What other examples can you think of where the text of a character’s spoken words is a clue to or misdirect of what’s really going on underneath the dialogue? I’m talking about specific types of dialogue.
It would be handy to create a reference list.
