“Ten faces igniting movie buzz”

On Sunday, the LA Times “Calendar” section came out with one of those listy lists again: This one “Ten faces igniting movie buzz.” Not sure how many folks outside the 101–10–405–110 Hwood bubble are frothing at these faces, but I’ll say this: They’re all involved in interesting projects:

I’ve already fawned over Demetri Martin here. So let me gush over someone else: Neil Blomkamp and the movie District 9. I saw the trailer for the first time this weekend and it is totally cool. Basic plot summary from IMDB:

An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology.

Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame is one of the movie’s producers. Check out the trailer:

This is Blomkamp’s first directing gig (he also co-wrote the movie’s screenplay) and if the cool documentary feel of the trailer is any indication of his creative chops, then we could be in for a treat on August 14th when the movie debuts here in the States.
