This day in history: “The Hollywood 10”
On today’s date in 1947, this happened:
Movie studio executives meeting in New York agreed to blacklist the “Hollywood 10,” who were cited a day earlier and jailed for contempt of Congress when they failed to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee. Who are the Hollywood 10? Alvah Bessie, Herbert J. Biberman, Lester Cole, Edward Dmytryk, Ring Lardner Jr., John Howard Lawson, Albert Maltz, Samuel Ornitz, Adrian Scott and Dalton Trumbo.
I’ve been a member of the WGA since 1987. The legacy of the Hollywood 10, the courage they demonstrated and commitment to their ideals is a profound one to all Guild members.
For those who wish to learn more about the Hollywood 10, you can start here with a GITS post about Dalton Trumbo, featuring some rare video clips.
