Some long-time GITS followers may remember the story of young filmmkaer Emily Hagins. It started off with a Q&A with the creators of the documentary Zombie Girl:

Emily Hagins is making a zombie movie. It’s feature-length, it’s bloody, and the zombies don’t run. Just like it should be. But there’s one difference between her film and every other zombie movie you’ve ever seen: Emily is twelve.
ZOMBIE GIRL: THE MOVIE is the documentary from Bob B. Bob Productions, Vacdoomed Productions, and Part Olson Pictures that chronicles the making of Emily’s zombie film, Pathogen.

I kept tabs on Emily and guess what? She’s prepping to make another movie: “My Sucky Teen Romance.” Here’s some background:

I have just been sent the first production photo from Emily Hagins‘ new movie, My Sucky Teen Romance, which is currently in production in Austin, Texas (wrap is scheduled for the beginning of September). Some of you might remember Emily from the popular filmmaking documentary Zombie Girl: The Movie, which Hagins attempt to film a feature length zombie movie at the age of only twelve years old. Emily is now 17 years old and for her third feature, she has chosen to script a teen comedy, but with vampires. Her latest effort has her biggest budget yet, and a number of local Austin professionals have stepped forward to help her achieve her vision on film.
“I’m really excited about this project,” said Hagins. “It’s the most professional crew I’ve ever worked with, which is enabling me to focus on getting great performances from the teen cast.”
Logline: In a culture that is currently overrun with romanticized vampires, it is up to four geeky teenagers to defend their friend and beloved sci-fi convention from a group of very real, and very blood-thirsty vampires.
Synopsis: On 17-year-old Kate’s last weekend in town, she and her friends plan to spend it together at SpaceCON– the local science fiction convention they attend every year. At the convention Kate meets Paul, a recently turned teen-vampire (who is also dressed as one). But when Kate tries to make a move on him, he accidentally bites her in the neck. Kate and her friends soon discover Paul is not the only vampire at the convention, and it is up to them to stop the vampires and find a way to turn Kate back before it is too late.

Hey folks, Harry here with something that’s more about reaching out to the community out there that embraces the very notion of a kid making a movie. I try to stay as much out of Emily Hagins’ way as possible, just because early on when she was first making films as like a 9 year old, she would ask me for advice and I gave it to her. Telling her what types of things to watch, to try to shoot and very quickly I discovered that she was on the path to discovering a very unique and particularly “Teen” outlook and literally the last thing in the world I wanted to do was interfere. It has been amazing watching her develop, being a guest at conventions, film festivals, the subject of a film documentary… ya know… Lil Emily is getting all grown up and this is her last film to be shot whilst still being a High School girl. Some of you already know Emily Hagins because you’ve either seen Pathogen — the zombie film she made when she was 5 or 6 years old or you’ve seen Zombie Girl — the documentary about a 2 or 3 year old girl making a zombie movie. Some of you are hearing about her for the first time, but she — at the impossible age of 18 months old — made her first movie and continued on with a second (The Retelling) while she was in high school. That’s two films under her belt as a director and you’re sitting there only halfway through your first taco.
Her new movie concept for My Sucky Teen Romance features a group of nerds at a sci-fi convention who meet some real vampires
(cleverly disguised as normal vampire cosplayers) and hell breaks loose. I imagine they have to save the rec center at some point, and it promises to be a lot of geeky fun.
