Update: “Go Into The Story: The Quest”
Okay, as it turns out, there were 3628 loglines submitted. I reviewed each and every single one of them. A total of 21 loglines have made the first round cut. Starting in the next hour and into tonight, I will be sending emails to those 21 writers to begin an interview process I have detailed already [for more information on that, go here to a previous post].
NOTE: THIS IS A FLUID SITUATION!
I never expected this many submissions and I have been scrambling to do due diligence with them all, while taking care of everything else I do including my own writing, teaching, and so forth.
There are perhaps another 30–40 loglines I put onto a preliminary list. I want to go through those one more time, and I may add some of those to the group of 21.
In addition, there are several of you who showed some good creative instincts, but just didn’t quite nail your story concept [IMHO]. I am making a list of those writers and will reach out to them once this entire Quest process plays itself out.
As I noted yesterday, there may be cases where I take on another writer to go through The Quest workshop privately with me — for free — if I feel like the combination of story concept, writing talent, background and so on warrant making that additional commitment on my part.
I may want to talk with some writers on the phone just to see how that goes and feels, maybe some other way I can facilitate their creative process.
As I say, fluid.
Bottom line: I am moving forward toward selecting — hopefully — four writers to do “The Quest” beginning Monday, July 16. However I will almost definitely be contacting people who did not make the list of 21 just to see if there’s a there there. And a few may be added to the group of 21.

Many, many times. So if you fail to receive an email from me, that does not necessarily mean your ideas aren’t good. As I indicated from Day 1 of this “Quest” process, I set my standards of assessment re your loglines extremely high. Indeed that is what led to me inviting Max Millimeter to advise me in this process, I needed his hard-ass voice, otherwise I would have probably invited dozens of you to come along for the ride which would have been totally insane for me and my life, as opposed to working with just four of you which is only a little insane.
So you may very well have a really solid story concept, even if I don’t contact you.
Moreover there is always the opportunity for you to Go On Your Own Quest [which you can read about at the end of this post here], so you can write a script, sell it for big bucks, and come back to laugh at me for not selecting your logline.
And as I have suggested, I will more than likely do “Go Into The Story: The Quest”: Winter 2013, the same opportunity to do the 24 week workshop for free with me as your mentor.
So if you don’t hear from me, do not feel bad. Rather use the experience to feel motivated. Prepare to Go On Your Own Quest and write that damn script! Come up with more and better story concepts! Read scripts! Watch movies! Become better at the craft!

UPDATE: I have emailed the 21 writers who have made the first round cut. There may be a few more tomorrow. Again if you did not receive an email, it does not necessarily mean your story idea isn’t a worthy one. There are a whole host of variables in my decision-making process, mostly about the commercial viability of the story concept, but others such as trying to get a balanced group in terms of genres, not wanting too similar of story ideas, etc. The best thing you can do if you did not get selected: Commit to writing a script! And with Go On Your Own Quest, you will have a structure within which to do that as well as [likely] online forums where you can commiserate with other writers. More to come on that soon.
