Update: “The Quest”
For those interested in the latest on “Go Into The Story: The Quest,” click continue.
For background, go here.
As of today, I have reviewed 2900 loglines out of a total of approximately 4000. I have put promising ones onto a list. Once I get through the entire set of submitted stories, I will go through the list and identify perhaps 20–25 writers who I will contact via email for additional information. I’ve worked through the calendar and come up with this schedule:
Monday, June 25: Emails go out to those writers who make the first round cut. Those writers will need to provide information including a writing resume [basically your background and history as a writer], story synopsis [if you have fleshed out anything more of your logline], writing sample [screenplay or screenplay excerpt, short story, novel excerpt], bio, plus a brief questionnaire.
Thursday, June 28: Information due from first round writers.
Saturday, June 30: Emails to writers who make the second round to set up phone calls with me.
Sunday, July 1-Monday, July 2: Phone calls.
Friday, July 6: Contact the Questers.
Monday, July 9: Announce the Questers.
Monday, July 16: The Quest begins! Core [Theory]: 8 weeks.
Monday, September 10: Prep: 6 weeks.
Monday, October 22: Pages: 10 weeks.
Monday, December 31: The Quest ends!
You will recall I had originally planned on starting “The Quest” two weeks earlier, however 4000+ logline entries crashed that idea. The Questers will be pressed to finish that first draft over the Holiday season, but you know what? If you want to succeed in this business, you have to be able to put in the time, no matter what’s going on in your life.
Or as Max Millimeter would say, “Merry Christmas. Get your fucking script done!”
While we are waiting for the announcement next week, here is something you can do: Note those dates in your calendar. If you get selected as a Quester, that’s going to be your writing life for the next half-year. And if you don’t make the final four, you can Go On Your Own Quest, using the same time-frame to inspire you to develop and pound through a first draft of your own script.
I’d like to thank everyone who has provided ideas for the proposed GOYOQ user forums. Your suggestions have helped me to begin to formulate a plan, one which I will be making public for your feedback after I get through this initial craziness related to “The Quest.” Since the first 8 weeks are devoted to theory, we can carry on that conversation here on GITS. That will give us plenty of time to prepare for the GOYOQ forums before we hit the writing portion of the workshop.
Finally how about a slogan for “The Quest”? Any ideas, please post in comments.
