Wanted: Your writing advice

Toward the end of the Guardian series we’ve been running “10 Rules for Writing Fiction,” jeff & posted this comment:

Here’s what catches my eye. A lot of these writer’s rules revolve around not having a day job.

More than a fair point. So I thought what if I threw out this question to the GITS community:

What advice do you have on how to balance your writing with your day job?

You work. You write. How do you manage to pull it off? How do you structure your life to do that? What tips do you have to share with others?
