Written Interview: James Wan (“Insidious”)

Today’s interview is with writer-director James Wan at MovingPicturesNetwork. An excerpt:

The initial triumph of “Saw” led to Wan and Whannell being crowned the godfathers of torture porn, which opened up certain doors in Tinseltown but also closed many others. “Leigh and I have always said, we’re not just horror fans, we’re film fans,” Wan says. “But this is Hollywood, and Hollywood loves to pigeonhole people. If you’ve been successful in one particular arena, they think that’s all you’re really good at. That’s part of the reason, after ‘Saw,’ all I was known for was being the blood and guts and gore guy. They kind of forget that the first ‘Saw’ film wasn’t just about blood and guts. If anything, it was pretty muted compared to all the sequels and imitators that came along.” He pauses, then adds, “Especially in the first one, people swore they see Cary Elwes cut his leg off. All he does is, he puts the blade to his leg. That’s really it. And I tell people it’s because we didn’t have money to make a prosthetic foot!”
