“Amazon Studios Top 50 SHITTY SCRIPTS REVIEWED!”
Some hearty nameless souls have taken it upon themselves to track the goings-on with the whole Amazon Studios venture [I posted about them previously here]. I checked in with them recently and found this:
The semifinalists were just announced yesterday by Amazon, and we are sort of pleasantly surprised that only ONE screenplay of the the “top ten” (on the front page) made it into the semifinals. Furthermore, only THREE screenplays out of the top thirty (on the front page) made it to the fifty semifinals!
So, it looks like someone’s reading the screenplays at Amazon besides the obviously gamed top thirty.
There was also another anomaly, Michael “Choady” Coady placed in the semis with FIVE screenplays. Some people on the message boards have alluded that because “Choady” lives in the same general area as where Amazon Studios is located, that he might know someone working on the contest. This is possible, but unlikely.
The truth is that “Choady” seems to be a pretty good writer with a wide range. We enjoyed mostly all of the snippets we read of his screenplays, and could see some of his scripts actually becoming a movie.
We’re almost certain that “Choady” is going to win one, or both spots in the contest for December.
The Amazon Studios Press Release was:
“We are very excited that there are so many strong scripts to choose from and that so many talented writers have embraced the Amazon Studios opportunity,” said Amazon Studios director Roy Price. ”Selecting the winners will not be easy. We hope filmmakers will now take the Amazon Studios development process to the next step by producing a table read or other visualization to compete in our test movie contests. And for anyone whose script is not on this list, I hope they will take heart in the fact that we have a new contest every month. They may just be a polish away.”
Yeah, sure.
Then they move into the tongue-in-cheek business of reviewing 50 sh*tty scripts submitted to Amazon Studios.
BTW someone from Amazon Studios reached out to talk with me about what they’re doing. If you have any questions you’d like asked, please post in comments and I’ll raise them when I get around to speaking with them.
