Black List and Hasty Pudding Institute Screenwriting Fellowship

An announcement that went live today:

The Black List and the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 are pleased to announce the Hasty Pudding Institute Screenwriting Fellowship, which seeks to increase the visibility of satire and social commentary in the arts.

The inaugural fellowship will include a $20,000 grant to help one aspiring professional feature screenwriter of satire or social commentary who has not yet made $100,000 in their writing career in order to continue to develop scripts and projects in that tradition.

“We are incredibly excited to announce this innovative fellowship,” said Andrew L. Farkas, Graduate Chairman of the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770. “Satire is at the roots of the Hasty Pudding’s history. We couldn’t be more thrilled to help discover and promote writers in this tradition.”

Beginning today, writers who have not made more than $100,000 in their writing careers and who have a feature screenplay hosted on the Black List website that is either satire or possesses significant social commentary can opt into consideration.

Opt-ins close for this opportunity close at 11:50 pm PST on July 10, 2014. Shortly thereafter, the Black List will deliver a short list of writers to the Hasty Pudding Institute’s judging panel for final deliberations. The judging panel, comprised partly of Harvard and Hasty Pudding alumni, is still being finalized, but currently includes WHIPLASH and LABOR DAY producer Helen Estabrook, former Daily Show head writer David Javerbaum, and Trophy Wife co-creator Sarah Haskins.

The Hasty Pudding initiative is particularly interesting to me because I love satire, yet it is in my view the most difficult type of comedy to pull off. I happened to watch Network the other night — again! — with my college class and my guess is only a genius like Paddy Chayefsky could have made that movie. And man, are we living in a time ripe for satire. Hopefully this particular fellowship will lead to a great one in movie theaters down the road.
