Daily Dialogue — December 4, 2011

Clouseau: Guten tag.

Hotel Clerk: Good Day!

Clouseau: My name is Professor Guy Gabroir, Medieval Castle Authority from Marseilles. Tell me, do you have a room?

Hotel Clerk: I do not know what a rum is.

[Clouseau leafs through his translation dictionary]

Clouseau: Zimmer.

Hotel Clerk: Ah! A room!

Clouseau: That is what I have been saying, you idiot…room…zimmer.

[Clouseau signs in, the clerk hands over the room key. Clouseau walks through the lobby, approaches a dog lying on the floor.] Clouseau: Does your dog bite?

Hotel Clerk: No.

Clouseau: [bowing down to pet the dog] Nice doggie.

[Dog barks and bites Clouseau in the hand]

Clouseau: I thought you said your dog did not bite!

Hotel Clerk: That is not my dog.

Trivia: The screenplay for this film was written by Frank Waldman and Blake Edwards as one of two possible screenplays (the other being the screenplay that became The Return of the Pink Panther) for the proposed Pink Panther TV series. After The Return of the Pink Panther turned out to be a success, Edwards decided to make the unused screenplay into this film.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Misdirection at work here twice. Once with the use of the word “room” and once with the dog.
