Eleanor: Your cat died.

Steve: Which one?

Eleanor: Marmalade.

Steve: Well, how did it die?

Eleanor: A rattlesnake bit it in the neck.

Steve: Goddammit, Eleanor. Couldn’t you have broken it to me a little easier than that?

Ned: What kind of cat was it?

Steve: Who gives a shit? I think it was a tabby.

Trivia: Writers Noah Baumbach and Wes Anderson named several of the places and crew members in the film spontaneously after things and people they saw around them at the Italian restaurant where they held many of their meetings about the film. Pescespada Island, for instance, was named for one of the dishes on the menu. Some of the characters’ names are named after waiters and patrons at the restaurant.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Note the quick turn in Steve’s character from “Couldn’t you have broken it to me a little easier,” suggesting the news upsets him, to “Who gives a shit,” demonstrating quite the opposite.
