Great News for Go Into The Story fans!

Some exciting changes create new learning opportunities for anyone interested in screenwriting.

A week ago, I created quite a stir when I released an eBook: "Spec Script Deals: 1991-2025". Clocking in at 517 pages, the book includes 2,560 individual listings of spec script sales and options over a 35 year period. 96% of the listings include loglines or story summaries which represents a gold mine for screenwriters as a resource for generating story concepts.

I suppose most folks were surprised at my decision to give away the book, but longtime Go Into The Story readers might have figured as much because when I launched my blog in May 2008, I did the same thing: My vision was to create an online educational resource for screenwriters they could access for free.

There's a history behind that decision. When I broke into Hollywood by selling a spec script (K-9) in 1987, I was a complete outsider to the business. I didn't attend film school. I didn't live in LA. I only knew one person who worked in the film industry and he was a lowly assistant at 20th Century Fox.

Ever since I was fortunate enough to become a working screenwriter--I've been paid to write over 30 projects at nearly every major Hollywood movie studio and broadcast TV network--and knowing how hard it is to break into the business as an outsider, I felt a calling to help aspiring screenwriters however I could.

Go Into The Story is an example of that commitment. It's why when Franklin Leonard approached me about my blog--he was a big fan from early on--I agreed for it to become the official screenwriting blog of the Black List. Franklin and I share a similar vision: Create new paths into Hollywood for screenwriters especially those well outside the system. It's why I helped to originate the annual Black List feature writing labs and have been a mentor at 27 of those events over the years.

For a long time, all was well in the Go Into The Story universe. It seemed like every week, I'd received an email from a writer who had benefited from my teaching on the blog. For example:

In 2016, agreed to move the blog to the Medium platform. For a few years, it worked really well. I enjoyed the interface as it was much easier than using HTML on WordPress.

Then there was a great disturbance in the Force: Medium shifted to a subscription model. That meant my blog was now behind a paywall.

Had I known this was Medium's plan, I never would have moved my blog there. But now I was stuck. Every single blog post I'd ever written was housed on Medium. At that time, we are talking about 20,000+ articles.

I tried to work around the paywall. Whenever I shared a new Go Into The Story article on social media platforms, I always used a "friends link" which bypassed the paywall.

It was a pain in the ass, but I was still committed to making my blog available to people for free.

Fortunately, the good folks at the Black List came up with a solution: Move the blog to Ghost. As an open source platform, the chances of it going behind a paywall are minimal.

Thus, about 10 days ago, with the incredible technical skill and labor of Black List CTO Dino Sijamic, the entire roster of every single Go Into The Story post transferred from Medium to Ghost, which means...

NO MORE PAYWALL!!!

Eighteen years after I launched Go Into The Story ... it's free once again!

At present, there are 37,800 blog posts. Apart from about a month in 2021 when I was recuperating from shoulder surgery and took a month-long break, I have blogged every day. I aim to continue that practice on the new site.

So, free blog! Free eBook! For anyone interested in screenwriting, that's a ton of free resources. I am happy to share them to support writers' creative aspirations.

Then there's this. In 2016, I was hired to be an assistant professor of screenwriting at the DePaul University School of Cinematic Arts. I have had a wonderful experience there these last 10 years--I'm now a tenured associate professor--teaching at a young film school which is ranked as one of the top 10 film programs in the U.S..

Yet as much as I believe in the value of a film school education, it concerns me there are people who cannot afford the time and/or money to pursue that option.

Over the last year or so, it occurred to me I was having similar thoughts to when I decided to launch Go Into The Story: How could I help people outside the film and TV industry develop as writers to facilitate their creative ambitions?

Which led me to this: The Patreon Program.
