Interview: Jim Hemphill

As part of my series on writers and filmmakers who on the front edge of making their mark in the business, recently I interviewed screenwriter-director Jim Hemphill, whose movie The Trouble With the Truth stars Lea Thompson and John Shea.

Here are all three parts of that Q&A:

Part 1: “I loved movies from a very young age, and I always wanted to be a writer-director. The way some kids worshipped athletes, I worshipped Barry Levinson and Lawrence Kasdan and Paul Mazursky.”

Part 2: “I’m happy to rewrite a script to make it better, but not to satisfy the imaginary concerns of an actress who isn’t even doing the movie!”

Part 3: “The theatrical market for independent films has changed so much in the last twenty years. Unless you are very, very lucky, the chances of getting picked up by a major distributor like Fox Searchlight or Sony Classics out of a festival are miniscule.”
