Spec Script Sale: “Bastards”

Paramount drops mid-to-high-six figures to buy comedy spec “Bastards” from writer Justin Malen. Per THR:

Fraternal twin brothers find out that their mother’s been lying to them for years about their allegedly deceased father. The twins set out to find their real dad.

DDP supplies this additional note:

She confesses she slept around with politicians, athletes and movie stars she met at Studio 54 in the 1970s, one of whom may be their father.

Classic example of smart ‘similar but different’ thinking. It’s The Hangover meets Flirting With Disaster [or Broken Flowers]. Road trip. Self-identity. Mistaken identity. Strong high concept. Combine all that with what we have to assume is good writing and you can understand why this script went out to buyers on Monday and sold on Tuesday.

Malen is repped by Verve and H2F Entertainment.

By my count, that is the 39th spec script to sell in 2011.

The 39th spec script didn’t sell in 2010 until September 23rd.
