Spec Script Sale: “The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto”

Twentieth Century Fox buys fairy tale spec script “The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto” from writer Michael Vukadinovich. From Deadline:

It’s a prequel to the story of Pinocchio, in which Geppetto endures a life of misfortune, war and adventure, all to be with Julia Moon, his true love. The sweep is reminiscent of Big Fish or The Princess Bride and it creates a fresh way into the Pinocchio story at a time when revisionist fairy tales are dominating the movie landscape.

Revisionist fairy tales is damn right. Let’s see if we can list all the fairy tale projects that have been produced or bought in the last few years starting with Alice in Wonderland, Red Riding Hood, and all of these competing projects including Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, and a half dozen or more version of The Wizard of Oz. Why the interest in fairy tale projects?

Only 55 spec scripts sold in 2010.

Only 68 spec scripts sold in 2009.

Spec script sales are up 75% year-to-date over last year.
