Spec Script Sale: “Untitled Bryan Bertino Project”

Universal acquires ‘found footage’ thriller spec script written by Bryan Bertino. There are no details re the plot. Deadline article here.

Bertino is repped by UTA.

This is at least the third found footage spec script to sell this year and second within one month. Other sales are:

“Evidence” [John Swetnam, 1/21/11]

“Category Six” [John Swetnam, 10/29/11]

It does not appear the Hollywood’s found footage fetish has abated. In fact, I will be doing a live interview with John Swetnam in 2 weeks. If you have any questions for him re this particular sub-genre, post in replies.

Also in December, one of the GITS Script Reading and Analysis scripts will be a found footage screenplay, so a good opportunity to dig into that form of narrative and learn what we can about it.

By my count, Bertino’s script is the 96th spec script sale of 2011.

Only 55 spec scripts sold in 2010.

Only 68 spec scripts sold in 2009.

Spec script sales are up 88% year-to-date over 2010.
