I cannot draw. I cannot paint. I’m just not wired that way. So when I see someone who can create this type of art, it blows me away.
Look at what this street artist creates in a mere 6 minutes. Is it Monet or Picasso? No. But you know what? It still kicks ass. Dude is out there, intersecting with people, doing what he loves, and bringing his unique take on beauty into the world.
To me, there is nothing quite like creativity. Making something out of nothing? When we do that, we are part of an echo reaching back to very first act of creation: The Big Bang. When we write a story, we participate in the whole of human history where every creative event is a gem added to this jewel of a universe.
The pages you write today are part of the neverending chain of creative events. Think about that. Hopefully that brings you a sense of joy. And hopefully that joy will carry over into the next set of pages you write!

UPDATE: On this Day 15, the official midway point through the Zero Draft Thirty Challenge, I was looking for a really special something to sum up the spirit of this writing event. Check out this Facebook post from Emily Roth:
I’ll be honest raising 4 kids (5 if you count the hubby ? jk) under 8 years old and being 6 months pregnant makes it extremely difficult to muster the energy to write everyday. But I started at zero pages and I am at 24! Slowly I go, but at least I am going and learning a bunch on the way. The best thing we can do for our kids is pursue our dreams.
Parse out those last two sentences:
Slowly I go, but at least I am going and learning a bunch on the way. In an ideal world, everyone who participates in the ZDT Challenge would finish their Zero Draft. In one way, that is the point of the exercise. However “going” and “learning” are at least as important, generating some forward, positive momentum.
The best thing we can do for our kids is pursue our dreams. Joseph Campbell would surely approve. When he said the theme of the Hero’s Journey is “Follow your bliss,” what better way to attune our children to the singular importance of discovering what most enlivens them, then pursue that than for us as parents to do the same thing, to set an example.
We have one life! One! To do anything less than pursue what brings us Joy and allow our Creativity to express itself is to lead a diminished existence.
And here is Emily. Mother of 4 children. Wife to a man-child. Pregnant with another child. And she started this Challenge with zero pages… and now finds herself at 24.
Emily, you more than deserve today’s Trumbo Award!
