Interview: Emile Gladstone

Recently I had an in-depth conversation with movie and TV producer Emile Gladstone. Previously a talent agent at ICM where he was a partner and co-head of the Motion Picture Literary department, Emile is currently in post-production on his first film Army of One, written by Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman, directed by Larry Charles and starring Nicolas Cage.

Part 1: “What’s really odd about Hollywood is that the left hand really doesn’t know what the right hand does.”

Part 2: “The whole way remember this is your career. You are the chairman of your company. Your agent, manager, lawyer, etc are your VP’s. If you don’t lead the ship right, executives wont perform to the level they are able to.”

Part 3: “You have to feel that you’re a maker and that you’re going to make it. Not make development. Make content. ’Cause if you do, there is likely a buyer. And if your smart with your budget and production plan, you are going to make money.”

Part 4: “First of all, write what you’re passionate about, but remember you’re a slave to the structure, and mastering that structure takes time and practice. You’re not going to get it the first time out.”

Part 5: “You have to have believe because all it takes is one yes. Don’t be dissuaded. Be committed. Be smart about your time. Be a tactician.”
