2013 Spec Script Deals List

Here is the final 2013 Spec Script Sales List, each with a link to the GITS post about the sale. A few comments.

Tracking spec script sales is not an exact science. To make the blog’s list, there almost always has to be some sort of article in the press verifying a deal, but even then that can get dicey because the term “spec script” is itself rather amorphous in meaning.

In the broadest terms, it applies to any deal made for a script written ‘speculatively,’ that is for no fees, just the writer’s own sweat equity with the hope of making a sale. Seems simple enough, but there is a lot of gray area:

* Some deals get announced that are in effect handshake, no money arrangements, typically forwarded to the press to generate some PR for the project.

* Some deals are by professional writers with a preexisting relationship with a production group or studio, so that a tacit agreement was in place for the project from the get-go, even if nothing official until the script comes in.

* Some deals are scripts that have been circulating for many months, even years in the process of being packaged, then finally get announced when the project receives a green light.

* Some deals are option arrangements for as little as $5–10K, not what we typically associate with spec script sales (i.e., six figures).

As I say, not an exact science. But this list does give you a pretty good sense of the buyer’s market in the last 12 months.

His mistaken identity thrusts him into the spotlight of law enforcement and the underworld as he attempts to clear his name. Title: The Making of Rock Hudson Logline: The transformation of Hudson from a shy kid into a sex symbol with rugged good looks was a tricky bit of business, in that he was forced to keep secret his homosexuality. The script tells the story from the vantage point of Henry Willson, the agent who discovered Hudson. Beyond changing the actor’s name, Willson became adept at keeping secrets. 20. Title: Eden Logline: “Eden” has an alien component to it as it is described as a modern day science fiction take on the Underground Railroad legend. In the case of “Eden,” rather than humans enslaving other humans, the plot sees aliens oppressing humanity. The story follows a family on the run, risking their lives to get to a free city via something called the Rail. Title: Ink and Bone Logline: The horror thriller concerns a female book editor who is assigned to help a reclusive horror writer finish his latest book only to discover the writer is being held prisoner in his home by everything he’s ever written. 50. Title: 3022 Logline: The crew members on a space shuttle 600,000 miles from Earth must question their individual fates and fight for their lives after their home — Earth itself — is destroyed. Writer: Ryan Binaco Genre: Sci-Fi Thriller Management: Russell Hollander Buyer: BCDF Pictures Date: 6/12/13. Notes: BCDF found the script after Binaco, a New Jersey native now living in Sweden, uploaded it to the Black List site for review by industry experts. The script climbed to the top of the site’s rankings, where manager Russell Hollander found it and signed Binaco.

51. Title: Eden Folly Logline: A rancher left for dead in the desert awakens to find he has no memory. Writer: Ryan Binaco Genre: Western Management: Hollander Entertainment Buyer: BCDF Pictures Date: 6/12/13 Notes: This is the second sale for Binaco to BCDF Pictures.

52. Title: 12/24 Logline: Two brothers try to prove Santa Claus is real by using a home video camera. The two brothers end up joining St. Nick on his Christmas Eve sleigh ride, but cause his sleigh to crash and must save Christmas. Writer: Matt Lieberman Genre: Family Agency: WME Management: Madhouse Entertainment Buyer: 1492 Productions / Ocean Blue Entertainment Date: 6/13/13 Notes: The idea was hatched by screenwriter David Guggenheim who is attached as a producer on the project.

53. Title: Cat Fight Logline: “Cat Fight” follows an insecure high school girl from a single parent household who gets a scholarship to an elite private high school in an attempt to reinvent herself. It’s all going well until she finds out the boy she’s dating has a crazy and psychotic ex-girlfriend, who suddenly returns from juvie and challenges her to fight it out after school. Title: Soldiers of the Sun Logline: Sun is set in a post-apocalyptic future and focuses on a squad of soldiers that searches for a fabled city of gold while on a tour of duty in Mexico liberating it from an alien race known as Orcs. 69. Title: Other People’s Love Letters Logline: The film has a Love, Actually vibe in that it follows the intertwining storylines of four romances, each at a crossroads. Title: Sorta Like a Rock Star Logline: The protagonist is Amber Appleton, a high school senior who secretly lives in the back of a school bus, a situation that arose when her mother’s boyfriend kicked them out. The bus (they call it Hello Yellow) is the same one that her mother uses to drive kids to school, and despite the adversity, Amber is a self-proclaimed princess of hope and girl of unyielding optimism. Spies coming through 1C all came from Oxford and Cambridge, aristocrats who stuck out like sore thumbs., Cummings got hold of a blue collar war veteran, trained him and sent him on a crucial mission: an attack on the British embassy in Russia (in which is now St. Petersberg) led to the theft of coded assassination orders signed by the King of England. The spy was tasked with recovering them because had they been discovered, WWII would have begun with those countries on opposite sides. Cummings etched his place in history and proved the need for MI6. The script was unusual in that is was peppered with actual newspaper clippings from the period to inform of how the stories were covered by British papers back then.
